Immunohistochemical Study of Carcinoembryonic Antigen(CEA) and Epithelial Membrane Antigen(EMA) Expression in Primary Malignant Epithelial Tumors of the Liver : Differential Diagnostic Aspects

Abstract
|
|
|
Primary malignant epithelial tumors of the liver can be subdivided into liver cell carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma The distinction between two groups is often difficult by means of conventional histologic staining.
By immunoperoxidase technique using antibodies against CEA and EMA, all 6 cases of primary hepatic tumors (4 cholangiocarcinoma, 2 hepatocellular carcinoma) were studied. All cholangiocarcinoma showed strong positive reaction for the presence of
CEA and
EMA, while hepatocellular carcinoma exhibited completely negative or focally positive reaction.
the results suggest that CEA and EMA may be of valuable use for distinguishing bile duct carcinoma from hepatocellular carcinoma.
